WHAT IS DEXA/BODY MASS SCAN? WHY DEXA?
The Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) is a system which measures both bone density and muscle/fat mass. it has many uses in identifying conditions and measuring recovery. It is the most advanced and comprehensive method for measuring body composition, ie. body fat, lean tissue and bone mass density (BMD). The scan is broken into the right and left sides and into specific body regions (arms, legs, and trunk) revealing muscle strength, identifying where patients are prone to storing fat, and pinpointing muscle weakness and muscle imbalances that need correcting.
WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM DEXA/BODY MASS?
Body composition testing is important for your overall health, for athletic performance and for those who may be at risk of osteoporosis The Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry provides extensive information regarding lean and fat measurements to athletes whose goal is to increase optimal body composition for athletic performance. The scan can also enhance the lives of individuals in weight management programs. Since, The Dexa Scan is reproducible, most future scans will provide accurate fat and lean mass trending information. This comprehensive technology will guide athletes and individuals in a weight management program who would like to gauge their progress or simply measure their fat. Because The Dexa Scan also measures bone density, this system may be advised if you are at increased risk of osteoporosis. If you have osteoporosis, you may have an increased risk of breaking a bone. The Dexa Scan provides efficient information and treatment options to help strengthen your bones.
HOW SHOULD I PREPARE?
On the day of the exam you may eat normally. You should ask your doctor whether or not calcium supplements are approved before your exam. Make sure to wear loose. comfortable clothing, avoiding zippers and other metal garments such as belts and buttons. Loose objects such as keys, wallets, glasses or jewelry should also be removed since these items might interfere with the x-ray images. You may also be asked to remove some or all of your clothes and to wear a medical gown during the exam.
HOW DOES THE DEXA/BODY MASS WORK?
The DEXA whole body composition scan test can take approximately 10 to 30 minutes. First, you will be asked to lie down on a padded table. A small X-ray machine will scan over the area to be tested. During this process you must be still while the x-ray is taken to ensure the machine takes a clear picture. Once the scan it complete it is capable of illustrating a picture map of the body outlining skeletal bone mass, lean muscle mass and body fat masses. In addition to providing a picture map it can also provide body geographical regions for bone mass and weight, lean muscle mass and weight and fat mass, and weight and body fat percentage.
